Stenftenagel, Wheeler headline a great
weekend for the Morehead Motorsports/Media Allstars Amateur Powerhouse Team!
It seemed like it was only a
matter of time…..bad luck can’t last forever….right? After an impressive but limited outing at
Spring Creek, team MMS/MAS showed up in full force for ATVA MX round 7 in
Blountville, TN to try their hands at a track that feels like it’s been on the
schedule since we stopped racing with 3 wheels.
The layout hasn’t changed much in ten plus years but Muddy Creek Raceway
is still considered one of the best tracks in the Southeastern U.S. That said, both track and weather conditions
were nearly perfect all weekend long. The same could probably be said about the
teams on track performance……nearly perfect!
After missing
2 rounds of racing Devin Stenftenagel #8 came back strong at Muddy
Creek. Devin picked up just where he
left of going 1-2 in the Open C class to take home his second overall of the
season. The #8 Yamaha also had a nice
weekend in Production C with scores of 3-4 to earn a respectable 3rd
place. Josh West #5 had a productive yet up
and down weekend. Josh rode strong in
450B moto 1 earning a 2nd but managed to find himself the victim of
a first turn debacle in moto 2. But the
Roopville, GA rider put his head down and charged his way up to 6th
place earning a 4th overall.
The production B class saw Josh earn scores of 5-6 (after riding the
second moto with a flat tire) which was good enough for 6th
overall. Lee Rentz #81 also made a comeback
at Muddy Creek after missing a few rounds of racing action. Lee must have been eating his Wheaties while
he was at home as he scored 2nd overall in both the Production and
Open C classes aboard his KTM 450SX. Jake McGraw #83
fresh off of his great performance in Minnesota….
did it again. Jake managed to duplicate
his performance of just a week ago as he used scores of 3-3 in Production B and
4-1 in 4-stroke B to take home 2 2nd place finishes. Jake’s ride in 4-stroke B was extremely
impressive as he pulled the holeshot and never looked back taking the main
event win in the process! Speaking of
repeat performances, it seems to be the theme this time around. Hillsboro, OH’s
Ryan Wheeler #52
decided that winning the 450C overall a week ago at Spring Creek wasn’t
enough. So Ryan used a 2-1 score to
bring home his 2nd overall in two weeks. The #52 Suzuki wasn’t done though as he also
went 2-3 in 4-stroke C to grab 2nd overall in that class as well (just
as he had done the week before). This
young rider is picking up steam and confidence as the season progresses, so
these results could become a familiar site.
Ronnie
Higgerson #665 once again had an up and down weekend, which is to be
expected as this is his first season as a full time Pro-Am rider. Ronnie had some bad luck in the Pro-Am
unlimited main but Sunday’s Pro-Am Production race saw the KTM pilot go 8-5 for
6th overall. Did we mention
that Ronnie scored a 6th overall a week ago at Spring Creek in the
Pro-Am unlimited class? Not everyone had
good fortunes at Muddy Creek though.
Round 7 of the 2010 ATVA MX Nationals were just a continuation of a year
long frustration for Calen McGinty #33.
Calen pulled the holeshot in Open B moto 1 and had the lead for 2 laps
before an over aggressive pass by one of his competitors sent him off the track
and over the bars. Too add insult to
injury Calen also had to fight two hands full of blisters all weekend
long. As they say…what doesn’t kill you
only makes you stronger. So we look for the #33 Suzuki to catch a break before
the season is over and show everyone what he’s capable of. Last but not least, Chase Cunningham #419 had solid
finishes in all 3 of his classes at Muddy Creek. Chase managed to win moto 1 in the 25+ class
but just couldn’t hold on in the main and ended up scoring a 2nd
overall. Open A saw the Morehead, KY
rider score consistent moto finishes of 5-4 to earn 5th overall. The class that seems to be absorbing all of
Chase’s misfortune this season is 4-stroke A.
Muddy Creek was no exception as he went 9-7 on the weekend for 8th
overall due to some wrong place, wrong time events and the loss of his front
brakes in Sunday’s main event. In
fairness though…..2 out of 3 isn’t that bad!
We are also
proud to announce that we have picked up one of the fastest and talented youth
riders in the sport to a limited support team role for the remainder of the
2010 season. Jordan
Digby #88 will be doing battle in both the 70 single speed and 90
auto jr. classes for Team MMS/MAS. Jordan
won every moto in every class he entered at Muddy Creek and won 2
overalls. We look forward to seeing this
young multi-time national champion on the podium during the 2nd half
of the season.
It’s easy
to see that the Morehead Motorsports/ Media Allstars Amateur Powerhouse team is
hitting its stride at just the right time.
As we prepare for the home stretch it looks like several team members
are poised to make a serious run in the points.
It’s not out of the question that several riders could be in contention
for more than one National Championship before season’s end!
